5 Reasons Every Busy Sri Lankan Professional Is Buying a Walking Pad in 2026

Even a year ago, there was hardly anyone who knew about a walking pad in Sri Lanka. These days, they’ve got deals on sale on Daraz, are in the living rooms of apartments in Colombo and have been viewed by millions on local TikTok and YouTube videos.

Walking Pad is a flat, compact treadmill that has been made specifically for slow walking, normally between 1 and 6 kilometres per hour. Has no large frame, no handles, and folds flat for easy storage under a sofa or under a bed. It is intended for use in a desk position, in front of a TV screen or any other still sitting activity.

What is it about Sri Lankan professionals, in particular, that are buying them in droves at this moment? Here are five reasons, and all of which are so logical once you know the truth of what it’s like to work in Colombo in 2026.

Reason 1: The Commute Has Stolen All the Time That Used to Go to Exercise

Colombo’s population of professionals spends an average of 2-4 hours commuting daily. This represents 10 to 20 hours per week of sitting in traffic, which can’t be used for exercise, sleep, cooking healthy meals, or anything productive.

When a person finally arrives home from a long job and then has to go to the gym or head for a run outside, he or she actually feels as though it is quite impossible. Not lazy, impossible. The fatigue caused by Sri Lankan traffic is a documented phenomenon and poses one of the biggest hindrances to regular exercise in Sri Lanka.

A walking pad doesn’t add an extra commitment; it’s replacing sitting with walking for time that is already planned to be spent indoors. Tonight you will be watching TV for an hour. It can be performed seated or on a walking pad at a slow walking speed of 2 kilometres per hour. The show does not vary. The number of steps does.

Reason 2: Working From Home Created a New Sitting Problem

Since 2020, remote and hybrid working have been adopted widely in Sri Lanka and have not gone away. Now, hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankan employees are working remotely for a portion of their workday. This may sound like a healthy idea: no commute, more control over the day. In reality, that can involve sitting for 9-10 hours daily in a home office chair, without the breaks to get up and stretch as you might have in a traditional office.

In an office, you walk to the meeting room, walk to the pantry, walk to a colleague’s desk. Then you go from your bed to your desk and back at home. Many people may only take 800-1200 steps in a day during an all-day work-from-home day, which is a fraction of what’s required.

A sitting desk riser or standing desk pad can transform sitting time to standing time. Sitting and walking at 2-3 km/h while reading emails or participating in video calls does not impair cognitive function and the model is quiet enough that it will not interfere with the video call. Walking pads are used by professionals in Sri Lanka for working out throughout the day, and they always come back with 8,000 to 12,000 steps, despite not having a specific time set aside for exercising.

Reason 3: Colombo’s Heat Makes Outdoor Walking Genuinely Unpleasant

It is a problem that is peculiar to Sri Lanka, and only a full dose of motivation is not enough to overcome.

When you step out to take a stroll in Colombo at 6 PM, you will experience 32-degree heat with high humidity, uneven pavements, vehicle exhaust and a lot of areas where there are no pavements. It is not physically comfortable, it may be dangerous, and few people can maintain it as a daily routine.

The weather issue is never a problem with a walking pad in the house. You walk in AIR CONDITIONING comfort. You don’t need to wear your boots, you’re not held up by traffic or exhaust fumes, and you’re never in danger of getting your feet wet in a flooded drain. Walk at 11 pm when it is cooler and convenient or 7 am before the heat sets in. The weather doesn’t matter anymore when it comes to steps!

This is not a luxury, but the only possible mode of everyday walking for people living in apartments with no space for them to go outdoors or those residing in areas where walking is indeed bad.

Reason 4: It Is Far Cheaper Than a Gym Membership Over 12 Months

In Colombo, the monthly fee of a medium-range gym ranges from Rs. 3000 to 8000. So for the past 12 months, between 36,000 and 96,000 LKR, for a place you travel to, live with strangers, and frequently give up after two months.

The prices of the mid-range walking pad vary between 25,000 and 45,000 LKR when purchased outright. It is at home and accessible 24 hours a day; there are no monthly fees, no commute, and no intimidating environment. If you’re more of an individual who would prefer a bit more daily motion instead of hardcore gym going, then the money side of things is simple.

Consistency is the key word. A walking pad that the user walks with every day for a whole year offers a lot more health benefits than a gym membership that is used a few times a month and then forgotten. The professionals in Sri Lanka purchase walking pads, and they are using them much more often than the people who purchase gym memberships; that’s simply because the barrier to using it is zero.

Reason 5: It Works While You Do Everything Else

This is the walking pad’s most distinguishing feature compared to all other fitness products. It doesn’t require special time. It is not necessary to have an exercise block. It works during work hours, while watching a cricket game, while you’re playing an online game, and while you’re flipping through your phone.

In Sri Lanka, where working professionals are busy and often have tight schedules, family duties, and lengthy commutes, it can be hard to find time to exercise. The walking pad doesn’t take time away from the other. It occupies the already lost time of sitting.

The Bottom Line

It’s not a passing trend to walk around using a walking pad. It’s a viable answer to a very specific Sri Lankan problem: so much sitting, so little time, and weather so much of the year that walking outdoors is truly hard, for most people.

If you’re stuck working in a chair for over 6 hours each day, and haven’t had time or energy for a regular workout, a walking pad is likely the single most beneficial Christmas present you can give yourself to boost your long-term health in 2026.
