The size of Colombo apartments is shrinking. The cost of membership in the gym is increasing. You’ve been warned that sitting at a desk eight or 10 hours a day is bad for you, and the message is gaining momentum.

That, in turn, has seen an increasing population of people in Sri Lanka creating their own fitness plan within their apartments, without a gym membership, without any outdoor space, without any big equipment. At the heart of this transformation is one product type that has redefined the concept of fitness training in the indoor environment in Sri Lanka: the walking pad and under-desk treadmill.

This is the ultimate guide to understanding, selecting, and finally, using them to the best of their ability.

Under Desk Treadmill vs. Walking Pad: What’s the Difference?

Both these terms are used interchangeably, but the products are slightly different.

The easier of the two is a walking pad, and that’s what you are going to use. A flat, non-framed treadmill belt with a small motor for walking speed of 1-6 kilometres per hour. No large side rails, no display attached to a frame, and folds completely flat. Easy to store and convenient to use in small spaces. The majority of people stand on the floor while using walking pads at a raised workstation or counter, or in front of a TV set.

The under-desk treadmill is basically the same thing, but with a slightly sturdier construction, which can sometimes include a larger treadmill surface, a detachable or fold-down screen and a higher speed range, which can include walking as well as light jogging. Under desk treadmills are created specifically for use below a standing desk so that you can walk whilst working at a computer.

For the majority of people living in apartments in Sri Lanka, a decent walking pad is good enough. If you have or are looking to purchase a standing desk, and want to access it with a treadmill that is built into the desk, consider an under-desk treadmill.

Before you purchase, look for the following:

The market for walking pads is growing rapidly in Sri Lanka and the market is already over-saturated with imports that are not of good quality and have identical looks to a good product in promotional photos but underperform in the real world.

The quality of the motor is paramount. Any motor less than 1.5 hp will not be able to handle continuous use and will operate for a shorter time. When shopping for a model for everyday use, find one that is at least 1.5 to 2 horsepower on continuous duty, rather than peak power, which is a different consideration and is often misleading.

Comfort and safety are important with belt size. If the width is 40 centimetres or more and the length is 100 centimetres or more, walking stride will be natural without feeling constrained. Some lower-priced ones will employ shorter belts, which will make the stride too brief and uncomfortable after 20 minutes.

Noise is important to apartment living in Sri Lanka. Thin concrete floors of many buildings allow sound to transfer to neighbours below. Be especially wary of reviews that mention noise, rather than merely the manufacturer’s noise claim, which may be based on conditions that are optimal. A brushless motor and rubber feet will make a much quieter model than traditional motor designs.

The maximum weight capacity of the seat should be 20 kg over the weight of the rider. A machine that is rated for your exact weight is operated at 100% capacity throughout its life, reducing its useful life considerably.

The speed range should begin at 1 kilometre per hour, or lower for ease of use when walking to work, or at least 6 kilometres per hour for more active walking sessions.

Price Ranges in Sri Lanka – What each tier will give you

Walking pads from an entry-level price of LKR 15,000 – LKR 25,000 are available directly from Chinese manufacturers on Daraz. The basic belt is likely to be no more than 1 to 3 kilometres per hour in speed, have no display and use a motor that might not be up to the task of operating the belt for long periods of time daily. This is okay for light walking but not for someone who is looking to walk for 60-90 minutes per day.

Models that cost anywhere from 25,000 to 45,000 LKR provide a significantly better experience, with wider belts, quieter motors, remote control functionality and LED displays indicating speed, time and steps. For most Sri Lankans, whose jobs involve regular use of the machine, these are the most cost-effective choice. There are a few good models available on Daraz and local fitness shops in this range.

The better quality models with an increase between 45,000 and 75,000 LKR come with Bluetooth connectivity for step tracking applications, more durable motors for heavier wearers, inclines and improved long-term durability. If you are going to use the unit over many years, this is worth the investment.

If you’re a heavy user looking for a machine you’ll use every day, then look for a premium under-desk treadmill that is more than 75,000 LKR. These are more reliable, fully integrated with apps, have a higher speed range and offer a full warranty. Generally, these are imported directly, or you can obtain these from fitness equipment importers in Colombo who specialize in this product.

The Apartment Workout: Around the Walking Pad

The power of a walking pad. It’s a complete fitness solution when combined with some basic body weight movements in your Colombo apartment.

Morning – a 30-minute walk on the walking pad at 3-4 kilometres per hour before work. This will help you get around 2,500 steps in and get your metabolism going for the day.

Mid-morning – 20 minutes of body weight exercises during the waiting time. The squat, push-up, lunge and plank are exercises that require no equipment and no extra space on your floor except a yoga mat.

Afternoon – Do 2 kilometres per hour on the pad for the longest video call of the day. Without expending a single minute of exercise time, 60 minutes of this equates to 3,000 to 4,000 steps.

Evening – 20 mins on the pad in front of the TV after dinner. This adds the final 1,500 to 2,000 steps needed to cross 10,000 for the day.

All equipment required for this workout: 1 yoga mat, 1 walking pad. Total cost: 25,000 to 45,000 LKR for the pad, 1,500 to 3,000 LKR for a mat. Total monthly cost after that is zero.

Before You Buy Questions to Ask

Look for leftover toiletries on the floor of your apartment. Is it on the ground floor or do you have neighbours below? If they say yes, the first thing you need to consider is noise and vibration management. You can do so by reading reviews of Daraz that mention noise and vibration.

Assess space available. The floor space required for most walking pads is about 140 x 55 centimetres while in use. Check to see that it will fit into your desired area before you place an order.

Check the return policy. Walking pads are large and you can’t return them easily. Purchase from a car dealer that offers a return or exchange program if the motor noise is louder than anticipated.

The Bottom Line

In 2026, the Sri Lankan apartment workout is more attainable than ever. A mid-range walking pad and basic body weight exercises provide you with a full, consistent and truly effective fitness program; one that’s completely within the walls of your home, without regard to weather conditions, commute or access to a gym.

There’s no need to live in a big house. It doesn’t require a lot of money. You’ll need a little machine, a clear floor and the lookout for a new way to get things done.
