Sri Lanka has been attributed with lush green landscapes, warm seas, and rich culture. But have you heard that the tropical climate and the colorful lifestyle of the island also influence the way we exercise? Here in this blog, we will discuss how weather, routine, and local culture can affect our exercises, and how you can create a fitness routine that fits with your lifestyle in Sri Lanka.

The Tropical Weather Factor

The temperatures, humidity, and sun are also very high in Sri Lanka, particularly in areas such as Jaffna. The combination of that mix influences us when we attempt to exercise.

When exercising in hot and humid weather:

  • The body labors towards cooling down. It is more perspired, and the heart rate increases.
  • Studies indicate that exercise activities decrease with an increase in temperature and heat stress in tropical and subtropical areas. BioMed Central
  • One of the studies discovered that the wet-bulb globe temperature (inclusive of humidity, sun, and wind) rises, and the work capacity decreases. The New Indian Express
  • A different study also questioned individuals in tropical climates regarding their daily activities and the impact of heat and concluded that most people felt less energetic, fatigued, and that heat was an inconvenience. PMC

This is to say: When it is very hot outside, it may not be as effective or even more tiring to do heavy weight lifting or run long distances. But the good news? We may still play upon the weather and not struggle with it.

Climate and Culture Shape Our Workout Habits

Local Culture + Routine: Sri Lankan Way

The ways and times of exercising are based on our everyday patterns, family life, and even work routines.

  • In most of Sri Lanka, the mornings are cool, evenings might be rainy or humid, and noons are scorching.
  • Social life is a common occurrence outside: meetings, labor, housework, and transportation. Movement is therefore an element of our way of life, yet there is such a thing as structured exercise, such as visiting a gym, which might conflict with the regular routines.
  • The traditions, community play, and group sports are strong in the north, Jaffna, etc. It means that people may decide to be in groups, play in the evenings, do outdoor activities, then go to the gym and work out.
  • Because of the climate, the workout during the day may be complex, and it is natural that most of the locals choose the morning or evening training, or a gym (air-conditioned gyms, halls with shade) due to the climate.

This knowledge of these trends will help us to develop fitness programs that will not be unnatural in our climate, but will be an effort to recreate the exercise in a cold climate region.

Developing a Weather-Friendly Routine

It is upon these that you will find it easy to design a workout regime that will be in line with the local weather and your local lifestyle.

a) Pick the right time:

  • Probably afternoons (store-afternoons), not early in the morning (before the sun rises) or late in the afternoon (after the sun sets), will not be that heat-stressed.
  • Hard outdoor work is to be avoided on the hottest day of the year (usually 10 am to 4 pm).

b) Choose the right place:

  • Use shady (trees, buildings) or indoor, well-ventilated or fan/air-conditioned spaces.
  • When it is very humid, it is more appropriate to train inside or to have short periods of high intensity, though not prolonged endurance.

c) Differences in length of sessions, intensity:

  • Instead of one 60-minute exercise in the heat, you may do two 30-minute exercises.
  • When it is hot, put more emphasis on quality than time.
  • Include cooling-down exercises, stretching, and light recovery exercises.

d) Be wise and thirsty to heal:

  • Pre-workout: Pre-workout is a time during which one is supposed to take water or rehydrate oneself with water.
  • During Workout: Take water during the workout, or replenish water to the body during the workout.
  • Post-workout: Post-workout is the time that one takes after an exercise, where water is taken in or water that is replenished.
  • Decrease the amount of days of more advanced exercises: yoga, Pilates, mobility.
  • Watch your body. In the event that you are unusually fatigued or lightheaded, this can be heat stress.

e) Out-of-doors and indoors as weather permits:

  • When the forecast says rain, storm, or extremely humid, switch the workout to the indoor environment or resort to body-weight/resistance exercises
  • Install applications or clocks to ensure that the sessions are effective, to ensure that you finish before the heat sets in.

Climate and Culture Shape Our Workout Habits

Play + Community, The Cultural Advantage

You will have additional benefits because the culture in Sri Lankan society is communal and outdoor-friendly:

  • Sports that involve teams, exercise classes or groups, and outdoor boot camps are all good, particularly early in the morning or in the evening.
  • In Jaffna, there can be local organizations that play football, volleyball, or running gangs, making exercise more of a social activity, thus more enjoyable and regular.
  • Exploit the surrounding landscape: beach jogging, sea strolls, temple gardens, early mornings, everything of these is combined with the culture, landscape, and climate.

A Simple Weekly Plan Example

Below is an example of a plan that you can either follow or modify to suit your case:

Key Takeaways

  • Sri Lankan weather is tropical, which puts actual difficulties in outdoor exercises: heat, humidity, and the sun all contribute to making our bodies more active.
  • However, by scheduling the routines based on such factors (time, location, intensity), we will be able to leverage the weather to our benefit.
  • Add this and our cultural advantages: community, group activity, local scenery, and our morning/evening rhythms.
  • Be weather-conscious and body-conscious, do exercises that are a local way of life and not an imitation of a workout that a friend in the country does.

References

  • The systematic review established that such factors as shade, indoor recreation, and proper infrastructure contribute to the level of physical activity in tropical or subtropical climates. BioMed Central
  • An experiment that looked at the effect of heat stress among tropical adults established that heat stress had a strong influence on the energy levels and exercise capabilities. PMC
  • The studies conducted on the effect of weather on physical activity revealed that extreme weather (hot or cold) decreased outdoor physical activities. PubMed

The knowledge of climate + culture will help you create a fitness regime that suits you in Sri Lanka instead of attempting to impose a regime in a place that is completely different. Your exercise can be informal, efficient, and even long-term, whether you are in Jaffna or elsewhere.
