Water is life. It takes up over half of our body weight and plays a major role in every function our body does. But still, many of us don’t consider staying hydrated an important thing. Hydration is the major reason why we feel best; it does everything from lifting our mood and energy to improving our exercise performance.

It’s a must to be aware of what happens when we don’t stay hydrated, especially in warm countries like Srilanka, where the heat just sucks up all the water from our bodies. So, that’s enough reason to stay hydrated. In this blog, we’ll go through how drinking enough water affects our mood, energy, and physical fitness, along with scientific research

Why Is Hydration So Important?

Our bodies have about 60% water, and every cell needs water to work properly. Water carries the nutrients throughout the body, removes waste from the body, and regulates body temperature, keeping the joints and muscles healthy.

We become dehydrated when we don’t drink enough water. Have you heard about mild dehydration? That is, losing about 1-2% of body weight in fluids. They can affect how we think, feel, and move. For example, if you weigh 70 kilograms, just about 1 to 1.4 liters of water lost as sweat or urine can reduce your performance and mental function.

Hydration and Its Impact on Mood

Hydration and Mood: Feeling Calm and Happy

How can hydration have an impact on mood? Actually, scientific studies show that dehydration has a negative effect on your mood patterns. When you drink less water, you’ll feel tired, anxious, confused, irritable, and very sad.

One proven study shows that people who take in more water feel less tired and confused, which, on the other hand, improves their mood. So, when you don’t drink enough water, it’s obvious that you’ll feel thirstier, calmer, and surrounded by a negative aura.

Now, the working crowd who has to manage work and family stress, what benefits can you receive?. Drinking enough water is a simple way to improve your mood and keep a positive outlook. Proper hydration will help your brain produce chemicals that’ll sharpen your mind and keep you active.

Hydration Fuels Energy: Avoid Fatigue and Boost Performance

When you don’t drink enough water, your heart starts to work harder to pump blood, so the oxygen flow to the brain and muscles is reduced, and you start feeling tired.

As we’ve seen before, even mild hydration reduces your energy level and affects the way your brain works. After you rehydrate again, you can clearly see the improvements, where you’ll start feeling alert, take less reaction time, and have better self-esteem. Dehydration lowers your energy and makes your daily tasks feel harder.

In Srilanka’s tropical climate, dehydration can happen even more quickly through sweating. Drinking water regularly throughout the day keeps your energy stable, helping you to stay active and focused .

Hydration and Physical Fitness: Support Muscles and Recovery

Even muscles contain 75% water, so now we know why muscle cramps are formed. All because of not drinking enough water, you’ll also feel weak and fatigued. When you are hydrated, your muscles will be strong and work efficiently during any physical activity.

Water supports joints to move smoothly, as cartilages in joints also contain 75% water, so dehydration plays a role here too, making joints feel stiff or sore.

After exercising, water will help you remove the waste products that are generated in the muscles, which will reduce soreness and help in speedy recovery. This helps people follow their fitness routines and avoid injuries as well.

Hydration and Its Impact on Mood

How Much Water Should You Drink?

Professionals suggest that we need to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses (around 2-2.5 litres) of water daily. However, the amount can vary depending on age, your daily activity, and climate.

In hot countries like Srilanka, or on days when you exercise or sweat a lot, it’s very important to drink the fluid that has been lost( drink water).

Some easy ways to stay hydrated:

  • Start your day with a glass of water.
  • Carry a water bottle and drink as much as possible throughout the day.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables that contain more water, like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges.
  • Try to consume fewer sugary drinks and caffeine, as they  can increase dehydration.
  • Listen to your body and drink whenever you feel thirsty.
  • Notice your urine color: pale and clear means good hydration, dark yellow means you need to drink more.

Hydration for Mental Wellness in Sri Lanka

Studies show that there is a connection between hydration and mental health, which reduces the risk of depression and anxiety. It is assumed that people who drink a few glasses of water have higher rates of depression.

For children, adequate water intake helps improve attention and mental flexibility.

Maintaining hydration is a natural and easy way to support your mental health, reduce stress, and improve mood. This is especially important in Sri Lanka, where the warm weather increases the need for water. Drink more and save your mental health.

Hydration and Skin Health

Drinking water keeps the  skin moist and glowing by improving elasticity and removing toxins. Well-hydrated skin is less likely to become dry or have wrinkles, which is beneficial in warm and humid climates.
