Have you ever found yourself wanting to see just how fit you can be, but figured that marathons were too monotonous and CrossFit was too complicated? Well, there is a new fitness event that is replacing the gyms of the world and maybe what you want.
What is HYROX?
HYROX (pronounced as high-rocks) is a global indoor fitness race. Suppose you are on a treadmill, and you jump off and do burpees, then get back on and run some more. That is basically the HYROX, but much more vigorous and, in fact, quite entertaining.
The race is not complex: 1 kilometer running, and a workout station. Run one more km, do another training. Repeat this 8 times until you are done. It is eight kilometers of running all in all, and eight different exercises to test your strength and stamina.
The best part? All HYROX races around the globe are in the same format. If you are competing in London, New York or Sydney, you will still do the same workout in the same sequence. This implies that you are able to compare your time with your friends around the world and monitor your progress with each race.

The 8 Challenges You’ll Face
This is how each HYROX race works out, in the following order:
1. SkiErg (1000 meters) – It is similar to a rowing machine, except that sitting is replaced by standing and pulling down. This machine exercises your arms, core and legs simultaneously.
2. Sled Push (50 meters) – Push a heavy sled around the floor. With the burning of your legs you will have to lean into it and put everything into it.
3. Sled Pull (50 meters) – This time, pull that sled back to you with a rope. You will really feel this in your arms and your back.
4. Burpee Broad Jumps (80 meters) – Get a burpee and run forward as much as you can. Keep running until you run 80 meters. Yes, it is as difficult as it appears to sound and yes, everybody hates this station.
5. Rowing Machine (1000 meters) – Time to sit and row. As soon as your legs start to relax, your back and your arms switch places and work another kilometer.
6. Farmers Carry (200 meters) – Take two heavy weights (one weight in each hand) and walk (do not drop) 200 meters. Here, the strength of your grip and the torso will be put to the test.
7. Sandbag Lunges (100 meters) – Have a heavy sandbag on your shoulders and perform 100 meters of walking lunges. It is the part where most individuals strike the wall and they need to go deep.
8. Wall Balls (100 reps) – In the final, powerful shot, take a heavy ball and in hurling it against a wall target, catch it, then squat down, stand up and do it 100 times. Rep 50 will have your legs screaming.
Why is Everyone Doing It?
HYROX gained popularity during the last few years, and there is no wonder why. More than 550, 000 athletes will be attending over 80 races across the world in 2025 alone. That is a colossal leap forward since a few years ago no one had heard of it.
It is Fair to All: There is no variety of workouts performed by different gyms as in other fitness events; HYROX is uniform. This brings in the playing field where it is not which gym or what equipment you have access to that counts but rather the effort that you put in that makes the difference.
You Don’t Need to Have Special Skills: You also do not have to know how to perform handstand push-ups, Olympic lifts or gymnastics exercises. You can do HYROX, provided that you can run, push, pull, and jump. The movements are practical and useful, things that literally make you stronger in real life.
There is a Competition Type That Suits You: You may also compete in either the Open division (standard weights) or Pro division (heavy weights). Not ready to go alone? Try Doubles, in which you and a partner divide the workout stations. Even an option of Team Relay exists in which two stations are done by four people.
It is Indoors: Rain or snow, heat, HYROX takes place indoors in large convention centers or exhibition halls. No worrying about the weather spoiling your race day!
It is a Real Community: You will find people of all levels of fitness cheering one another on when you show up to a HYROX race. There is a charged mood, music is playing and the crowds are cheering on each and every participant.

How Long Does It Take?
The average gym attendee takes HYROX in 90 minutes. The elite athletes who specifically train on it can rip through it in less than an hour. As a beginner or to have fun, you may just need to take a little more than two hours. It is not the speed that matters, but that you get over that finish line.
The world record time is very high and the records of women are equally good. However, there is one more aspect: HYROX is not only applicable to professionals. Most of the participants are normal citizens who have regular jobs and train on a few occasions every week. They are teachers, nurses, students, and office workers who want to prove themselves.
Getting Started
In case you feel interested in HYROX, you cannot simply jump into a race without preparation. Begin training by combining running with functional training. Stress on cardio endurance, at the same time, training in strength. A lot of gyms have also started to provide station-specific training classes in which trainers can guide you on how to prepare yourself in each station.
An average training week could consist of three distance runs, two strength days, pushing, pulling, and carrying, and a day when you train on the actual HYROX stations. Don’t forget recovery days! Rest is when your body gets stronger.
You are ready, register for a race. Entry is typically around 99 pounds or approximately 120 dollars, which is your race bib, timing chip and a finisher medal. Other races even hand you a T-shirt. Most importantly, you will receive an automatic time that will be registered in the international HYROX.
The Bottom Line
The fitness industry is never behind in the search for the next big thing and this time it is HYROX. It is a mixture of stamina and the fun of varied exercises, a package that is not an easy task. You have the pleasure of finishing something challenging, and you can gauge your own progress using precise times and the difficulty of being a part of a community that is expanding worldwide.
HYROX provides you with a tangible objective to strive for, regardless of how old you are, be it 15 or 50. It is not ambiguous, such as getting in shape or being healthier. It is time-bound: run 8 kilometers and visit 8 workout stations as fast as possible. The transparency provides ease in training since you know what you are training on.
Are you ready to find out what you are made of, then? HYROX is waiting, and it is so worth it to cross that finish line and have it feel so good.
