75 Hard Challenge Review: Is It Worth It? What Science Says in 2026

Should You Squat Every Day? 5 Science-Backed Reasons Why Daily Squats Transform Your Body

You would have likely encountered it in the last few weeks; Instagram or TikTok feeds are filled with it: nicely piled coffee beverages with a protein twist, purported to increase energy, help you pack on the muscle, and simplify your morning routine. It is time to embrace the new form of the fitness craze known as the proffee, or protein coffee, the new product that has everyone in the gym in Colombo, to the busy go-getters in Kandy, grabbing their blenders.

However, here is where everyone is asking themselves: Is proffee worth the hype, or is it just another wellness trend that will be gone in a short time as your morning caffeine buzz?

What Exactly Is Proffee?

Proffee is not difficult: your regular coffee combined with protein powder or one of the high-protein foods, such as a protein shake. The idea was formed through the obsessions of the fitness community to optimize every meal and snack to recover muscles and provide a feeling of satisfaction. There is no need to drink your coffee and your protein shake separately, so why not blend them into one convenient beverage?

Protein Coffee (Proffee)

The most popular ones are adding protein powder to hot or iced coffee, combining coffee with an existing protein shake, or adding coffee with protein-rich foods such as collagen peptides to your morning cup. Certain cafes have even begun to sell proffee on their menus, though here in Sri Lanka, you are more likely to see DIY recipes floating around on social media.

The Advantages: Not a Trend Only?

We shall see what proffee really has to say, since there are some valid benefits of this mixture.

Easy Protein Consumption: To a great number of Sri Lankans who have busy working schedules, morning traffic jams, and family obligations, obtaining sufficient protein may be difficult. Proffee presents a fast remedy – you are getting both caffeine and protein replacement. It is especially useful to people who miss breakfast or cannot eat solid food in the morning.

Long-lasting: Coffee fills you with instant energy due to caffeine, and protein will sustain your energy and maintain your blood sugar levels. Such a mix can avoid the mid-morning slump that usually comes after a carb-laden breakfast of hoppers or string hoppers with only coconut sambol.

Muscle Recovery: When you are regularly going to the gym, be it in a Colombo gym or working out at home, the timing of protein intake is important. Eating protein a few hours after exercising helps in the recovery and development of muscles. Proffee can be a good post-workout beverage for those who want to exercise early in the morning.

Weight Control: Protein is also known to make a person feel full. As soon as you put the protein in your morning coffee rather than grabbing a biscuit or a wade along with your tea, you may end up controlling your hunger better all day. This would be especially useful to people who are struggling to cut down on the amount of snacks in the Sri Lankan culture that contain excessive sugar.

The Reality Check: Possible Negatives

There are some points to consider before you hasten to throw in the protein powder on your morning coffee.

Taste and Texture Problems: To be quite frank, not every protein powder goes with coffee. Some curdle, and they make an ugly, lumpy appearance. Others have overbearing inorganic flavors that tend to conflict with your well-brewed Ceylon coffee. You may end up wasting good coffee and even costly protein powder trying to get the combination of things to work.

Digestive Issues: Caffeine and protein do not go together when you are on an empty stomach. There are also people who develop bloating, stomachache, or additional trips to the bathroom. This may not be your favorite breakfast choice in case you have a sensitive stomach.

Protein Coffee (Proffee)

Nutritional Limitations: Proffee provides you with protein and caffeine, but this is not a full meal. You are depriving yourself of the necessary nutrients, such as fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, which are found in a balanced breakfast. Basing your diet on proffee would make you deficient in nutrients in the long run.

Price Aspect: Quality protein powder is not that cheap, more so in Sri Lanka, where imported supplements cost a lot of money. Once you are already spending money on a good cup of coffee, adding protein powder to each and every cup may lead to a big increase in your daily beverage budget.

Caffeine Overload: When you are adding protein to several cups of coffee per day, you may be overloading on caffeine. This may cause jitters, anxiety, disturbed sleep and high heart rate, which would not be beneficial to the protein benefit.

Is Proffee Right for You?

The solution is in the way of life, objectives, and likes.

Proffee may be a good choice in case you are a person who exercises in the early morning and needs fast food after the exercise, has trouble with breakfast, but has to consume more protein, is active and needs a convenient snack, or simply likes the taste and does not experience any digestive problems with it.

Nevertheless, it may be good to get past as a person with a sensitive stomach or digestive issues, or someone who prefers whole food sources of protein, such as eggs, dhal, or yogurt, has a tight budget and cannot afford the protein powder, or simply does not like the taste or texture combination.

Protein Coffee (Proffee)

The Sri Lankan Twist

You are interested in having proffee, right? You can offer it a little local touch. Think of locally produced Ceylon coffee at the Kandy or Nuwara Eliya estates. Take a pinch of cinnamon- a spice, which we have in abundance in our food, and a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder. To add additional nutrition and classic taste, one can either add a bit of kithul jaggery to provide a natural sweetness, or one can add some coconut milk to add a creamy and healthy amount of fats.

You might even try putting in protein powder into a regular iced coffee or make a proffee smoothie using some of the local fruits, such as bananas or papaya.

The Verdict

Proffee does not serve as a magic pill but neither is it a total nonsense. It is a helpful device that can be put into a healthy lifestyle with proper usage. The trick is not to consider it a meal substitute or a magic drink, but one of the tools of your nutritional arsenal.

Similar to most of the fitness trends, proffee is effective for some and not for everyone. It does not matter whether it is a fad or a good trend; it only matters whether it fulfills your unique needs and fits long-term and well into your lifestyle.
