Sri Lanka just hit the news headlines around the world. Sri Lanka has been named the top trending world wellness destination in BookRetreats’ ‘State of Retreats 2026’ Report, beating out Australia, Morocco, England, and Spain. The number of wellness experiences in Sri Lanka increased by 100 percent in one year.

The reason? Ayurveda and Hela Wedakama. The old healing practices of the land are attracting thousands of tourists from overseas who are willing to pay top dollar to explore what most Sri Lankians have in their own backyards, but which they’ve forgotten about.

This is the awkward dilemma. The world is flying to Sri Lanka for its traditional medicine. But most Sri Lankans are oblivious about what it is and how it can assist them to heal quicker, to sleep better and perform better.

What Is Hela Wedakama?

Sri Lanka’s native healthcare is called Hela Wedakama. It is thousands of years older than modern healthcare. Some of its traditions have been traced back to ancient Sinhala warrior and healing culture, which dates back to the time when there were no pharmaceutical drugs, surgeries, or imported treatments on the island.

Hela Wedakama is indigenous to this land, while Ayurveda originated from India and was adapted in Sri Lanka. It involves local plants, minerals and therapeutic methods which are specific to the climatic, ecological and human aspects of Sri Lanka. All of the treatments are based on the principle that the human body is intimately intertwined with nature; that healing is about reconnecting with nature, not masking symptoms with chemicals.

Herbal preparations, therapeutic oil massage, steam baths, detoxification courses, and dietary advice are among the other treatments offered at Hela Wedakama. Sri Lankan families have been passing down this knowledge from generation to generation for centuries. In many rural areas, it is still practised today. It is completely forgotten by most in urban Colombo.

Hela Wedakama and Fitness

Why Sri Lankans are concerned with fitness should give a second thought. For fitness-focused Sri Lankans, a second thought should be given

The modern culture of gyms has virtually nothing to do with training and nutrition. The third pillar, RECOVERY, is completely neglected by most of the Sri Lankan gym goers. You work out in the gym with full force. You get your protein in your meal. The next day, you try again and push as hard as you can. After some time, fatigue, inflammation and inadequate sleep begin to impede progress.

That is where Hela Wedakama can be of service with something of real worth.

Herbal oil massage (Abhyanga in Ayurvedic and local practice as Hela Wedakama) is one of the most effective techniques used to relieve muscle pain after exercise, promote the flow of blood and loosen stiffly bound joints. Therapeutic massage helps the athletes recover faster between massages. In traditional Sri Lankan massage, the herbal oils used are warm and anti-inflammatory, which helps in alleviating swelling and stiffness after heavy training sessions.

Resting is the most valuable recovery aid for any athlete. According to research, Shirodhara (pouring warm herbal oil into a steady stream for a few minutes on the forehead) is effective in drastically lowering the levels of cortisol and improving sleep quality. If you’re an average Sri Lankan who has been working out for years and still can’t seem to lose a pound from your belly because you are constantly stressed and get inadequate sleep and have high levels of cortisol, Shirodhara can solve this problem. If you are the typical Sri Lankan who has been trying to work out for years but still hasn’t managed to lose a pound from your belly and your main problem is chronic stress, inadequate sleep and high levels of cortisol, which we discussed above, then Shirodhara is the answer.

Panchakarma is a complete cure to cleanse the body from within and a treatment programme that lasts for 5 to 21 days. It is the most complete therapy of the Ayurvedic and Hela Wedakama tradition. A Panchakarma programme at a registered centre can establish a new set of body parameters for serious athletes or those who have long been engaged in rigorous workout regimes and who are experiencing physical stress.

Ira Badu Kanda is a Sri Lankan traditional breakfast dish of porridge made from local grains and medicinal herbs, which is rich in sustaining energy, aiding digestion and anti-inflammatory. It’s the easiest place to begin learning about Hela Wedakama, for those who want to begin using traditional wisdom day-to-day.

It can be found in Sri Lanka in the following locations:

There are more than 100 registered Ayurveda resorts in Sri Lanka that provide Hela Wedakama Ayurveda treatments. They include the luxury, international-priced wellness hotels in Beruwala, Bentota and Weligama, and smaller, but more affordable, registered ayurveda centres in Colombo, Kandy and Galle that provide individual treatments at prices more within reach for residents.

At a reputable centre, a single session herbal oil massage will cost you anything from 2,000 to 6,000 LKR, which is similar to the price of a month of protein shakes and is far more effective than most protein supplements at recovery.

The Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Medical Council is the body from which one can locate Registered Hela Wedakama and Ayurveda practitioners. Always make sure that the practitioner is registered and qualified. Treatments should not be offered cheaply and without proper credentials by an unqualified operator.

The Bigger Picture

Sri Lanka showed the world what it had only to be shown to itself again. Foreign visitors are paying thousands of dollars to participate in healing practices that are a part of this country’s cultural heritage.

The wellness tourism story doesn’t end here. A reminder that the Sri Lankan relationship to health, healing and the human body is ancient, sophisticated and very powerful. Modern Gym Culture is less than 100 years old. For thousands of years, Hela Wedakama has been developing its knowledge of human recovery.

There is no need to get a gym supplement or a foreign recovery tool. You must recognize your own country’s history as it has always provided.
