Fitness After 60 in Sri Lanka: Why So Few Elderly People Exercise and What Actually Helps

From Average to Mr Sri Lanka: What Local Bodybuilding Champions Actually Eat and Train Like

Currently, “10 000 steps a day” is the world’s number-one fitness challenge. So it’s the daily step goal that counts when it comes to reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight gain, even depression, as experts, smartwatch makers, and physicians all agree.

But then the question is whether you live in Colombo. The temperature at 9 AM is 32º. In numerous locations throughout the city, there are bumpy, flooded, or even nonexistent pavements. If all the traffic is outside, walking is not a relaxing activity, but rather a potentially hazardous one. Or how many hours do you work at home, or 10 hours at a desk? Walking to the house sounds like a matter of logistics that doesn’t happen.

Fortunately, it’s not necessary to leave the door for 10,000 steps. This is what you need to do from the comfort of your own home or apartment.

The importance of 10,000 steps

First, a bit of an explanation of why this number should be pursued.

The average Sri Lankan who uses a car or tuk-tuk to work, and works at a desk all day, steps between 1,500 and 3,000 steps each day. That’s not even close to the recommended target.

Your metabolism is slow at that activity. You have low blood flow. Your muscles, especially in your legs and abdomen, become weak over time. Your blood sugar control is affected because muscles are crucial to the processing of glucose, but inactive muscles are not as effective at it.

The study finds a whole new world of health at 10,000 steps per day. Lower blood pressure. Better insulin sensitivity. A gradual decrease in abdominal fat. Mood and mental clarity improve. If you are also exercising at the gym, you will see even more benefits from stepping up, as you will have a higher metabolism for the entire day, not just the 60 minutes you spend exercising.

This is an Indoor Step Strategy That Works

It’s not about taking a single big step to 10,000 steps indoors. It’s keeping the smaller movement blocks throughout the day until they start to accumulate.

Block 1 – Morning movement (2,000–2,500 steps)

Move for 20 minutes before sitting down at work or engaging in a morning routine. This doesn’t have to be formal exercise. Boil water for tea and march on the spot. Repeatedly lap around your apartment slowly from Kitchen to Bedroom to Living Room to Hallway. If there are stairs in your building, climb and descend them 5 times. These 20 minutes will help you start strong before 8 AM if you do them consistently.

Block 2 – Work-from-home walking (3,000–4,000 steps)

That’s where a walking pad or under-desk treadmill comes in handy, but it’s not essential. If calls and meetings aren’t camera-ready, stand up and move around your hallway or living room during the entire call. The typical professional spends 60 to 90 minutes on calls a day! Taking those walks while you’re on the calls gives you 3,000-4,000 steps without having to set aside any workout time.

For people who are on camera, or have to “type” during the conference, a simple exercise that can be performed at your standing desk or table is to “lightly step side to side” from foot to foot. It seems like a little, but that’s a lot of time when added u.p

Block 3 – Post-meal indoor walks (1,500–2,000 steps)

One of the easiest, yet most effective activities to do for both step count and blood sugar is a brief walk after a meal. Don’t have to go outside. The extra 1,500-2,000 steps after breakfast, lunch, ch and dinner help to significantly lower the spike in blood sugar that occurs after eating rice-heavy foods, like a typical Sri Lankan breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

A 10-minute walk within 30 minutes of eating is more effective at controlling post-meal blood sugar spikes than a longer walk at another time, research suggests. Steps are not only about steps, but also about real health impacts for Sri Lankans, who eat rice two or three times a day.

Block 4 – Evening movement (1,500–2,000 steps)

After dinner, don’t immediately head for the sofa—take 15 to 20 minutes to march in place or slowly circulate the house while viewing your usual evening television programming. In the evening, the majority of Sri Lankans watch TV or scroll through their smartphones for 2-3 hours. It’s free to enjoy, and it can help you gain 1,500 to 2,000 steps every day by replacing just 20 minutes of sitting.

A Walking pad is a thing you ought to try out

A walking pad, which is a flat, compact treadmill for walking at a slow pace, makes it much easier to reach the targets set for walking and that’s why thousands of Sri Lankan professionals are making walking targets a reality for the first time.

A walking pad can be used while working, watching TV, or taking calls and allows you to walk at 2-4 kilometres per hour, either in front of your standing desk or on your sofa. If you do 60 minutes on the walking pad, you will get 4,000 to 5,000 steps. That’s 1/2 of your daily dose from one session that you were doing anyway in your chair.

Walking pads in Sri Lanka can be found on Daraz from about 15,000 LKR for basic models. The price range of mid-range models equipped with better belts, quiet motors, remote controls ranges between 25,000 and 45,000 LKR. Noise is a factor that matters for apartment dwellers; some of the cheaper models are extremely noisy and may cause agitation to neighbours below.

Tracking Your Steps

Each smart device comes with a step counter, which is Health on iPhone and Google Fit on Android. Use a phone in your pocket or on your body all day for an accurate count. A basic fitness band, which is available on Daraz for approximately LKR 3,000 – 6,000, is even more accurate and will automatically remain attached to your wrist all day long.

Do check your count at midday. If it’s less than 4,000, you’ll be aware that you have to get more active in the afternoon. This is one of the best habit cues to establish daily step targets.

The Bottom Line

Ten thousand steps in Colombo doesn’t need to be in good weather or at the fitness centre. It involves building up small movements throughout the day – morning marching, walking during calls, post-meal walks and afternoon walks whilst watching TV.

It’s something you do daily and after 4-6 weeks everything will be the same story: your energy, your waist measurement and your blood sugar. Walking is the key to the way to work.
