One of the current problems of health in Sri Lanka is obesity, which is rapidly increasing today. It migrates across ages and groups in a serious manner, resulting in the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. The causes of obesity are mostly complicated, and it can be a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and the environment, but the good thing is that it is reversible with the proper approach. One of the most effective and long-term ways of combating obesity is by joining a gym. This blog discusses the issues that make obesity a serious problem in Sri Lanka, the problems others are experiencing, and how gyms can offer full solutions to these issues.

Obesity in Sri Lanka: Current State

According to recent health research findings and national surveys, it has been found that the percentage of people in Sri Lanka who are classified as overweight is about 23.4% with 5.9% being obese. It is even greater in the cities, particularly among females, the elderly, and individuals with greater income and education. The obesity level in children is also increasing; UNICEF states that the prevalence of overweight children has increased three times during the last 20 years, and a high proportion of children aged between 5 and 19 are affected.

The Sri Lankans develop obesity related complications at lower body mass indexes in contrast to the Western populations. This implies that even individuals who are not likely to be considered overweight by conventional standards could already be exposed to the dangers of having their health risks caused by excess body fat, and in particular, abdominal fat. This is why early intervention is important.

The Growing Obesity Crisis

The reason why obesity is a major issue of concern in Sri Lanka is that

  • Type 2 diabetes, which is a direct consequence of obesity, is a disease with more than half a million victims in Sri Lanka.
  • Obesity is strongly associated with heart disease and hypertension, which are major causes of disability and death.
  • Obesity has economic and health care implications of imposing a lot of cost on the government and the family.
  • Obesity is usually followed by mental health issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression because of social stigma and body image problems.
  • Obesity in childhood causes long-term health issues into adulthood, decreasing life expectancy and quality of life.

Obesity issues have become a major difficulty to address

Dieting is something that many people do in order to lose weight, and this is hardly sufficient. Calories are easily burned when the body is put on a cutting program and lacks physical activity, which results in loss of muscle, slower metabolism, and reduced energy. More so, sedentary lifestyles caused by desk jobs, increased screen time, and decreased physical activity in the regular routine are contributors to weight gain. The loss of motivation, professional counseling, and exercise programs are some of the reasons why many weight loss efforts are failing or collapsing.

The 10 Ways that Going to a Gym Will Help in Fighting Obesity

1.Coach Advice and Systematic Training

Gyms usually have certified trainers who assess your current fitness level, determine your goals, and develop a personalized plan. The plan is balanced in cardiovascular exercises, strength, and flexibility workouts. These customized programs aid fat burning, muscle building, and enhanced endurance with reduced chances of injuries.

Whether you are an amateur or a more experienced person, trainers track the progress and modify exercises. This will provide a secure, efficient route to fitness and weight loss.

2.Availability of Multiple and high-tech Equipment

Gyms have a good variety of machines, free weights, and cardio equipment such as treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines, or ellipticals, whereas at home or in a gym, a person cannot get such a variety of equipment. These permit whole body exercises that are applicable in the attainment of various muscle groups and heightened calorie burning.

The diversity makes the workouts dynamic and interesting, keeping the members motivated in the long run.

3.Motivation and Social Community

Being consistent is one of the most difficult tasks in a fitness journey. Gyms have supportive societies. Group sessions such as yoga, Zumba, Pilates, HIIT, and dance are entertaining and refreshing with creating a sense of camaraderie and responsibility.

Personal trainers and other people in the gym will become your motivators who will make you get through plateaus and celebrate progress. Developed routines bring discipline, and this is of paramount importance in the long term.

4.Appropriate for any Age and Fitness

Gyms are also non-discriminatory places and can be accessed by any person, whether young or old, new or professional. Workouts are tailored to injuries, health conditions, or limitations by the trainers. This eliminates panic or intimidation during safe exercising.

Gyms can be customized places for diverse populations by specializing in seniors, women, or rehabilitation needs.

5.Mental Health Benefits

Working out produces endorphins referred to as feel-good hormones that elevate mood and reduce anxiety and stress. Gymnastics help in ensuring that one gets better sleep, becomes sharper, and is full of energy during the day.

The atmosphere of the gym provides a favorable environment that contributes to self-esteem and makes individuals stop being engulfed by negative body image perceptions. Their fitness community provides emotional support and mental strength to many of the members.

6.Promotion of Sustainable lifestyle changes

In addition to weight loss in the short term, gyms enable lifelong trends. Workouts become a daily routine with the help of knowledge on fitness and health acquired through the influence of professionals.

Such habits, combined with healthy dieting practices and stress management, will significantly decrease the risk of obesity and improve the general well-being.

Preliminary Measures to Start Workouts in the gym to lose weight

  • Begin with professional fitness testing to determine the strengths and weaknesses.
  • Establish on-target attainable objectives that are directed towards health changes as well as weight reduction.
  • Establish a balanced diet comprised of aerobic (walking, jogging, cycling) and resistance exercises.
  • Include stretching and yoga as a way of recovering.
  • Gradual improvement is the objective; persistence is better than zeal.
  • Get a nutritional consultation to supplement exercise.
  • Monitor body parameters and fitness, not only scale weight.

Community and Government Initiatives Role

Broad-based obesity prevention involves the use of public health policies that will promote active lifestyles and healthy diets. The programs run by the government can include access and subsidies for fitness centers, community education, and promoting wellness programs that encourage physical activity in the workplace.

Schools should focus on physical education to manage obesity among children. The inter-disciplinary collaboration among health practitioners, physical fitness experts, and policy makers is the most important in altering the lifestyles in the country.

Conclusion: Making Health Your Own Match for a Better Sri Lanka

Obesity is a great hazard to the health and future of the population in Sri Lanka, but this is a challenge that can be overcome. By becoming a gym member, you can lose weight and gain fitness in a safe and effective, and supportive environment. It treats physical and mental aspects of health, which ensures that people are in a position to take charge of their health.

The gym is not only a gym to work out but also a community that inspires and informs. It assists in developing lifetime habits that are critical in keeping the weight in check and minimizing the chances of developing chronic illnesses.
